What the artist says:

Since retiring eight years ago, tapestry weaving has become an important part of my life. It is a relaxing and essential therapy for what could easily have become a lack of focus in retired life. I have a background in engineering and mathematics and readily acknowledge that I am severely challenged artistically despite having held a lifelong fascination with textiles.

I am particularly interested in the political, social and cultural narratives of all textile design, woven tapestry being especially rich in this respect. For my contribution of ‘Fabric of the North’ I have chosen to focus on the material resources and technical craft skills that facilitate the production of woven tapestry to be such a powerful medium for communication. I take my inspiration for the specific images from inside the studio where I work and from the fellow weavers who mentor and encourage me.
