What the artist says:

I wanted to capture the contrasts between coal and cotton, the black and white of it and our need for action for the environment.

In the past the exploitation of coal and cotton was on an industrial scale, providing both employment and exploitation of people and the environment. There were some enlightened mill owners who created villages for cotton production but I am not aware of the same efforts made for the miners and their families.

I wanted to weave a tapestry which encompassed the irregular shapes of coal and the cotton plant which could capture, hold in, the harmful nature of fossil fuels. We (the world) are in a bit of a mess, we need to change how we live and consume for the benefit of all. There is urgency to do all we can both in small ways and collectively in the political sense.
