What the artist says:

The northern fells of the Lake District, among which I live, have long been associated with industry, particularly slate and mineral mining. The Romans came here seeking precious metals: silver, tin, iron ore and occasionally found gold. Elizabeth the First regarded the fells around Caldbeck as priceless, and brought German miners to Keswick to extract the wealth. Walking the fells now, you can see the signs. There are hollows and screes where the fell rock has been scooped and scattered; miners’ tracks criss-crossing the fell obliquely, skirting the bog pools and adits slice into the depths of the rock. Remains are everywhere, persisting and shifting in the elements: light, wind and rain. My work attempts to capture something of the atmosphere and emotion bound up in this landscape.
