What the artist says:

On considering the exhibition theme, “Fabric of the North”, the mining industry came to mind, as it not only created wealth, but helped shape the landscape and architecture of many villages. I wanted to pay homage to the industry and its lasting heritage, showing miners both at work and during their leisure time, when whippet racing played a big part, often making more money for an owner than their mining wage. In my design I have chosen to simplify the figures and backgrounds and to use the same colouring for the man and the dogs to create more of a visual impact.
