What the artist says:

When thinking about the north of England, we often focus on the industry - the mills, the shipbuilding, the coal mining, the industrial landscapes of Teeside and elsewhere. But my mind goes back further into the past. I am a geologist by training, so the landscape is much older, much deeper, in my mind.
We have been shaping the land for thousands of years. The stones that formed the foundation for our more recent industry have also been used to mark seasons of the year, create places where communities come together to recognise key times of the year, commemorate the dead and celebrate life. These stones have been important to us for thousands of years: Ancient Voices reaching out to us through time.
